Night Closures Kuranda Range Road 5

Minister for Transport and Main Roads and Minister for Digital Services The Honourable Bart Mellish
  • Kuranda Range Road will be closed at night to all traffic from Tuesday 5 March until Friday 15 March 2024, weather permitting.
  • The road will be closed between 9pm and 4am.
  • Wet weather has further damaged the single-lane section near the Henry Ross lookout and urgent emergency repair works are required.

Following emergency repairs on Kuranda Range Road following ex-tropical cyclone Jasper, recent inspections following heavy seasonal rain have showed that further slips have occurred in the section current under single lane operation.

If further landslips were to occur, there is a risk that the trafficable roadway would become undermined. To allow for these additional emergency works to take place, Kuranda Range Road will be fully closed at night from Tuesday 5 March until Friday 15 March between 9pm and 4am, weather permitting.

The emergency works will involve soil nailing and shotcreting which will temporarily stabilise the slope to prevent further damage to the road and to ensure safety for road users.

Road users should plan their journeys accordingly and seek an alternative route if travel at night is necessary.

TMR is continuing to investigate long-term solutions for repair and recovery works to the damaged road network, including Kuranda Range Road.

TMR is prioritising the design, relevant approvals, and preparation of suitable construction methodologies for these recovery works.

The recovery works are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Quotes attributable to the Transport and Main Roads Minister Bart Mellish:

“Safety is our number one priority.

“I understand that closing the road is inconvenient, and we wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t absolutely necessary.

“I’d like to thank road users for their patience while we carry out these important emergency works.
