NSW police charge man with 10 domestic violence, resist arrest offences at Broken Hill

A man has been charged and an appeal for information issued following a house fire and the alleged ongoing domestic assault of a woman in the state’s far west.

On Sunday (1 September 2019), it is alleged the 27-year-old man punched and attempted to strangle a woman at a home on Hynes Street at Broken Hill.

Officers attached to Barrier Police District were notified of the incident and commenced inquiries into the matter.

About 7.30pm Monday (2 September 2019), emergency services responded to reports of a house fire at the woman’s Hynes Street home.

Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze however the home was extensively damaged by fire.

No occupants of the home were present at the time.

Officers from The Broken Hill Criminal Investigation Unit attended and established a crime scene, with initial examination of the scene showing significant indications the fire was deliberately lit.

About 10.30pm the same day, police arrested the man on Mercury Street at Broken Hill in relation to domestic violence offences.

It is alleged the man kicked an officer to the head as he was placed in the rear of the police vehicle.

He was taken to Broken Hill Police Station and allegedly head-butted an officer in the face as he was being removed from the police vehicle.

The man was charged with 10 offences including contravene prohibition/ restriction in AVO (domestic), common assault, intentionally choke person without consent, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, stalk/ intimidate intend fear physical harm, intentionally distribute intimate image without consent, assault officer in execution of duty (x2), resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, and assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm.

He was bail refused to appear before Broken Hill Local Court on Tuesday (10 September 2019).
