A man has been charged with serious domestic violence offences after allegedly assaulting a woman in the Illawarra.
In the early hours of yesterday morning (Sunday 21 June 2020), a man allegedly broke into a home on Norfolk Street, Berkeley, and allegedly assaulted a 23-year-old woman, known to him.
It is alleged the man grabbed the woman around the throat and threw her to the ground, before punching and kicking her repeatedly. He allegedly hit the woman’s head into a metal bed frame several times and held a knife to her throat, before leaving the home with a three-month-old baby.
Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attended and found the woman suffering lacerations to her head, bruising to her upper body, bite marks to her hand and her fingernail was ripped off.
She was treated at the scene before being taken to Wollongong Hospital.
A crime scene was established and forensically examined by detectives.
Following inquires, the man and child were located on Northcliffe Drive, Berkeley, a short time later. The child was taken to hospital as a precaution and did not sustain and physical injuries.
The 23-year-old man was arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with:
– special aggravated break and enter and commit serious indict offence-inflict grievous bodily harm,
– armed with intent to commit indictable offence,
– intentionally choke etc person without consent,
– assault occasioning actual bodily harm,
– destroy or damage property, and
– contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO.
He was refused bail and is due to face Wollongong Local Court today (Monday 22 June 2020).
