Two men will face court today charged after an alleged police pursuit on the state’s north coast earlier this week.
Officers from Tweed/Byron Police District have been investigating several incidents of stolen motor vehicles from within the Kingscliff sector over the past month.
Following information received, police located a BMW sedan – which had been spray painted black and its number plates altered – on the Wollumbin Street, Murwillumbah, about 2.10pm on Tuesday (19 October 2021).
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, however it fled at speed and a pursuit was initiated.
The BMW continued throughout the township of Murwillumbah, allegedly reaching speeds of approximately 140km/hr in a sign-posted 100km/hr zone.
The pursuit continued into Uki before the BMW crashed into a parked car at the intersection of Kyogle Road and Marshall Street; before two men fled the vehicle on foot.
Police established a perimeter and – with assistance from the Police Dog Unit – two men were arrested in nearby bushland a short time later.
Both men – aged 42 and 35 – were taken to Tweed Heads Police Station before being transported to Tweed Heads Hospital under police guard for treatment to injuries.
They were released yesterday (Wednesday 20 October 2021), where they were taken back to Tweed Heads Police Station and charged with a number of driving offences.
The older man was charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, steal motor vehicle, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period and take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, while the younger man was charged with take and drive conveyance without consent of owner and steal motor vehicle.
Both men were refused bail to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court today (Thursday 21 October 2021).
Police will allege the BMW was stolen from a Kingscliff property on Friday 17 September 2021.
Investigations are ongoing.
