NTEU welcomes incoming Albanese government, calls for urgent higher education rescue package

National Tertiary Education Union

The National Tertiary Education Union welcomes the incoming Albanese government and calls on the new Education Minister to address the damage caused by a decade of corrosive Coalition policy and chronic underfunding of public higher education.

The NTEU will call on the new federal government to:

  • Implement the recommendations from the ALP-led Senate Select Committee on Job Security Inquiry, including the introduction of measures to ensure casual conversion in higher education and legislation to criminalise wage theft and chronic underpayments
  • Reverse the Jobs Ready Graduate packages, including the hike in HECS for a number of courses, and reinstate the funding link between teaching and research
  • Implement a National Higher Education Funding Strategy that recognises and addresses the real cost of delivering quality tertiary education and research, ensures the safety and wellbeing of staff and students on campuses, and stabilises and diversifies revenue, particularly in regard to the increasing reliance on international student fee income
  • Implement in full the recommendations of the Respect
