Object Design College

Object Design is a University of Tasmania College Program unit, created for college students, who have successfully completed, or are demonstrating excellent progress in Design and Production or an equivalent subject.

This annual program is project-based, with all students attending a one-day symposium that included designer talks, technical demonstrations, and an introduction to their project brief. Students worked with teachers in their ‘home’ colleges towards completing a design in response to the project brief, Transmogrify.

To complete the program each student had to produce a major design piece for assessment, backed up by a project journals, drawing and models and the way the works are exhibited forms part of the final assessment.

Associate Professor Meg Keating, Head of School, School of Creative Arts and Media at University of Tasmania, acknowledged that the exhibition opening is an extra special achievement, and something for the students to be incredibly proud of.

“The challenges from the start have been huge with the beginning of the program coinciding with lockdown and temporary school closures. Students were asked to work from home and source inspiration for the brief “transmogrify” from their surroundings.

“Creativity and motivation are difficult at the best of times but to achieve this in isolation shows incredible motivation, resilience and engagement. The work shows us that students are engaging with a world that is changing, complex and at times confusing.

“There is great ambition in these works but also a great sense of hope. The theme Transmogrify is often used to tell a complex narrative with a bright resolution. This sense of hope is aspirational and bodes well for the creative thinkers and makers of tomorrow,” said Professor Keating.

Object Design will be exhibited at the paranaple arts centre until Saturday, 10 October 2020.
