Ombudsman calls for submissions on politicisation issue referred by Victorian Parliament

Statement from the Victorian Ombudsman

Today I have released an ‘issues paper’ seeking submissions to assist my latest investigation.

In February this year the Legislative Council passed a motion which required me to investigate a number of matters, including what has been described as ‘the politicisation of the public service’.

I have decided to deal with the referral in two Parts – Part 1 including matters related to the ‘the Red Shirts scheme’ and Operation Watts, and Part 2 covering other matters, including those on which I am now seeking evidence.

I have appointed Professor John McMillan AO to lead Part 2 of this investigation. Professor McMillan has held a number of senior integrity positions, including Commonwealth Ombudsman. He has never worked in Victoria and brings an open mind to the issues under investigation.

We are keen to hear from people with direct experience of the impact of politicisation – or otherwise – of the public service to assist my investigation. The paper poses a number of questions which I encourage you to read.

Contact information is in the issues paper and on the Victorian Ombudsman’s website.

All contacts will be treated with appropriate sensitivity, and the investigation will deal with all submissions on a case by case basis.

I will report to Parliament in due course on both Parts of the referral.
