The University of Otago – Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka remains a leader in educational performance, according to recently released key government indicators.
Released by the Tertiary Education Commission, the annual Educational Performance Indicators examine four measures across the sector – qualification completion rates, course completion rates, first-year retention rates, and progression from sub-degree to degree level study.

For the 2025 academic year, Otago was once again the leading university for qualification completion rate. It was also first for qualification completion amongst its Māori and Pacific student cohorts.
Other strong results compared across universities, for Māori students included first in study progression and second for first-year retention and course completion.
Otago’s Pacific students were first for first-year retention and second for study progression.
Vice-Chancellor Grant Robertson welcomes the results.
“These are a testament to our impressive student cohort that continues to excel,” he says.
“It also speaks to Otago having world-class researchers teaching our students, and dedicated kaimahi who work hard to support them to achieve academic success. Otago offers exceptional pastoral care for all our students, particularly our Māori, Pacific and disabled students.”
Otago’s overall results across the latest TEC performance measures:
- Course completion rate: 91.4 per cent
- First-year retention rate: 85.7 per cent
- Qualification completion rate: 74.6 per cent
