Following a series of global economic and geopolitical shocks, The University of Western Australia’s Public Policy Institute will present an expert panel on Tuesday, 28 November to examine Australia’s economic prospects and challenges in 2024.

Lockdowns, outbreaks of warfare, interest rate hikes and persistently high inflation have disrupted supply chains and energy and commodity prices – and soaring housing and rental costs have pushed more Australians into a cost-of-living crisis.
UWA PPI Director Associate Professor Paul Maginn said we appeared to be on the cusp of a period of unpredictable global volatility.
“We need information, we need insights, and we need to ask questions,” Professor Maginn said.

Panellists will explore a spectrum of critical issues, including the impact of geopolitical disruptions on Australia’s economic stability, food and nutrition security, labour markets and migration in a rapidly changing world, the availability of affordable housing and the transition to cleaner energy sources as we work towards meeting UN Sustainable Development goals by 2030.
The panel, moderated by UWA Professor of Economics Alison Preston, comprises Professor of Economics and Director of International Relations at the UWA Business School, Anu Rammohan, Chief Economist at the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA), Cassandra Winzar, Western Australian Treasury Corporation CEO, Kaylene Gulich, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA’s Chief Economist, Nicky Cusworth.
