Parliament to focus on burials and building Bills

The Northern Territory Treaty Commission Final Report will be tabled this week as Parliament resumes.

Minister for Treaty Selena Uibo will provide an interim response to the report which paves the way towards reconciliation and self-determination for the NT’s Aboriginal people.

During the week, Members of the Legislative Assembly will debate the Burial and Cremation Bill 2022, which will replace 70-year-old legislation.

The Bill enables regulation of cemeteries, protection and management of burial sites, and varied practices for the burial, exhumation and disposal of human remains, including respecting the rights of Aboriginal people to practice burial customs and traditions.

The Building Amendment Bill 2022, which is also up for debate this week, will provide the Building Practitioners Board greater scope to conduct an inquiry into the work or conduct of building practitioners whose registrations have ceased, and increases the financial penalties for professional misconduct by building practitioners.

Amongst Bills to be introduced this week are the Construction Industry Long Service Leave and Benefits Amendment Bill 2022, and the Animal Protection Amendment Bill 2022.

Sittings this week includes condolence motions for two Territory legends – politician and Aboriginal advocate Jack Ah Kit, and actor and dancer David Gulpilil.
