Red Rocks cliff in Bullen Range Nature Reserve near Kambah Pool will be closed from Tuesday 1 August to Sunday 31 December to protect Peregrine Falcons during their breeding season.
Executive Branch Manager of ACT Parks and Conservation Service Stephen Alegria said the annual closure supports the species to successfully breed and raise fledglings free of disturbance.
“Red Rocks Cliff is located on the western side of the Murrumbidgee River. It is one of only seven breeding locations for Peregrine Falcons in the ACT and for most of the year falcons happily share the cliffs with rock-climbers,” Mr Alegria said.
“However, Peregrine Falcons are extremely sensitive to human disturbance in the breeding season, and even small disturbances can be enough to deter courtship or causes abandoned nests. This closure of this breeding site is integral to ensuring the long term survival of the small population.
“I would also like to remind Canberrans that the use of drones in ACT parks and reserves is prohibited year-round. Drones can also disturb these sensitive falcons and other species in our parks.
“I am grateful to our rock-climbing community for their patience each year and encourage the community to explore or rediscover the other great options along the Murrumbidgee River Corridor,” said Mr Alegria.
Alternative options for rock climbers include:
- Bee Crag – on the Murrumbidgee Discovery Track, approximately 2.2km to the north of Kambah Pool
- Kambah Rocks – located off the Murrumbidgee Discovery Track, approximately 1km downstream of Red Rocks cliff
- Little Pine – 5 minutes walk from Pine Island carpark near the playground.
This closure is made by the Conservator of Flora and Fauna under the Nature Conservation Act 2014 and prosecution and penalties may apply for non-compliance. Rangers will be visiting the area to remind climbers of the closure.
