Path forward for Walking and Cycling

Mayor and Cr Smith with draft Walking and Cycling Strategy

Rockhampton Regional Council today released a draft Walking and Cycling Strategy and is inviting residents to have their say.

Mayor Tony Williams said the strategy sets out Council’s path forward over the next decade for walking and cycling.

“At Council we want to make sure we’re doing what we can to support an active, healthy, and connected community,” Mayor Williams said.

“Promoting opportunities for walking and cycling is one of the best ways we can do this.

“This strategy incorporates community feedback, identified opportunities to improve walking and cycling, research and best practice, and an understanding of our region’s needs.

“I really want to encourage everyone to take a read through the draft survey, and if you would like to provide feedback please head over to Council’s engagement portal.

“This strategy will help guide our direction over the next decade as we work to create a pathway and cycle network that will attract people of all ages and abilities.”

Infrastructure Councillor Ellen Smith said Council was eager to hear feedback on the priorities and actions identified in the strategy.

“There are five main priorities that have been identified through this work, and each priority area has a number of specific actions set against it,” Cr Smith said.

“We’ll be working to deliver these actions over the next decade, so if there is something you think is missing or should be a higher priority we would like to hear that feedback.

“Our vision in this strategy is about you – it’s about supporting you to have a healthy and active lifestyle and attracting you to walk and cycle for transport and recreation – so we absolutely want to know your thoughts.”

The strategy outlines five key priorities that will guide actions over the next decade. These are:

1. Encouraging walking and cycling;

2. Planning walking and cycling communities;

3. Developing safe and connected networks;

4. Developing comfortable and accessible networks; and

5. Easy access to information.
