The peak body for electricity retailers, the Australian Energy Council, has supported the call by the ACCC for households and small businesses to take time to check if they are on the best electricity deal for their circumstances.
Chief Executive, Sarah McNamara, said there are still significant savings to be made by households by ensuring they are on the best market offers.
“Customers should contact your retailer to ask if they have a better option for your circumstances or you can shop around and compare offers. The easiest way is for customers to log onto the Governments’ comparison sites Energy Made Easy and Victorian Energy Compare.
“Your retailer cannot just switch you to a new market deal because there is a need for the customer to give their informed consent to any changes, which is why if you think you should be on a better deal you can ask your retailer or compare the market deals.
“While in some cases market offers may have increased more than the regulated price, it is a reflection of the cost of contracts and of supplying that the retailer pays for that electricity.
“It is worth noting that although there have been increases in most market offers, the ACCC has found that 90 per cent of advertised market offers remain below the reference price.”
