Victoria has been lapped again under Labor following confirmation South Australia has poached the Australian round of the FIM Superbike World Championship from Phillip Island.
The Bend in South Australia will now host this event from 2028 as part of a multi-year deal and follows the loss of the Australian MotoGP to South Australia in February.
The loss of this event is yet another blow to Phillip Island and regional Victoria’s economy and tourism sector and leaves the future of the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit uncertain.
Under the Allan Labor Government, Victoria has lost a series of major events including the Commonwealth Games, Australian MotoGP, FIM Superbike World Championship Australian round, Land Forces expo and Australian Open Golf.
Victoria’s taxpayer-funded Grand Prix Corporation, established to manage the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix and Phillip Island’s motorcycle racing is now scrambling to fill the gap left by the loss of international motorcycle racing at Phillip Island.
Shadow Minister for Major Events and Tourism, David Southwick, said: “Labor is expecting the Phillip Island community to survive on memories rather than a packed events calendar.
“Victoria has lost its reputation as the events capital of Australia. While other states pick off our major events one by one, the Allan Labor Government has made it clear, major events have taken a back seat.
“It’s time for a fresh start and a new government that restores pride and confidence to our state.”
