Planned tree removal: Monaro Highway, Bombala

Mature pin oak trees planted alongside Monaro Highway, Bombala

Removal of the old avenue of oak trees along Monaro Highway (Stephen Street), Bombala is scheduled for early April 2024, in-line with a 2014 agreement between Essential Energy and the former Bombala Shire Council. The row of parallel oaks planted under this agreement are now mature, and the old trees directly underneath the powerlines can be removed without visually affecting the town entry.

Weather permitting, Essential Energy contractors will begin the tree removal in early April 2024. Traffic management will be in-place on this section of Monaro Highway while work is underway.

The parallel avenue planted in 2014 will remain in place.

Essential Energy has a responsibility to ensure that vegetation doesn’t grow too close to powerlines. By planning ahead – in recognition of the importance that these trees have for the Bombala community – Essential Energy and Council have ensured that locals and visitors alike can continue to enjoy an oak-lined welcome to Bombala.

Importantly, this work also ensures that the town’s power supply is protected for the long term, and removes the fire risk posed by the old avenue.
