Police charge man with fraud targeting elderly women

Mirrabooka Detectives have charged a man in relation to fraud offences worth around $52,000 after an extensive investigation.

It is alleged between February and May 2019, the man targeted an elderly non-English speaking woman in her 70s, befriending her and gaining her trust. He then allegedly used identity to obtain numerous mobile phone contracts through two phone companies in her name. This has put the woman in debt for around $51,000 in unpaid accounts.

It is further alleged on 1 March 2019 he attended a jewellery store at a Morley shopping centre and using the woman’s identity to obtain a credit agreement for a watch valued at about $1,800.

The 26-year-old man from Nollamara has been charged with three counts of Gains Benefit by Fraud and is due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court on 15 July 2020.

The investigation is ongoing and detectives urge anyone with information relating to these incidents to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online at www.crimestopperswa.com.au
