Police investigate sexual assault in Fitzroy

Sexual Crimes Squad detectives have released images of a man they are looking to identify following a sexual assault in Fitzroy in December.

Police have been told a 22-year-old woman left a bar on Brunswick Street about 1.45am on Saturday, 8 December and began walking north on Brunswick Street.

As the woman approached the intersection of Brunswick and Westgarth Streets, she saw a white 2002-2004 Hyundai Getz hatchback pull up nearby and the male driver got out and approached her.

The man struck up a conversation with the woman and the pair chatted briefly.

He then grabbed the woman and pulled her into Westgarth Street before sexually assaulting her.

The woman was able to break free from the man, who then returned to his vehicle and drove away.

Detectives are today releasing images of a man they wish to speak to in relation to the incident, as well as images of the vehicle.

He is described as Indian in appearance with a slim build and a beard.

At the time of the incident he was wearing a dark green jacket, grey hoodie, blue denim jeans and a long red beanie.

Investigators are hoping someone will recognise the man or the vehicle and are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
