Police update 1: Charges after PSPAs, Coorparoo and Wooloowin

A man has been charged after police made two emergency declarations under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) at Wooloowin and Coorparoo yesterday.

Police were called to a home on Hamley Street, Wooloowin around 1.30pm on May 17 after a quantity of explosive materials were located in a room by a person visiting the residence.

EORT were notified and attended the address whilst police commenced an immediate search of the vicinity for a man alleged to be responsible for the materials. A electric conductive weapon was also seized.

An exclusion zone was established under the PSPA of the area surrounding the residence while ongoing investigations resulted in police locating a man in a vehicle at Coorparoo.

A second emergency declaration was made under the PSPA in Coorparoo whilst officers from the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) attended and negotiations commenced with the man.

He was taken into custody without further incident.

The man’s vehicle was seized and a subsequent search uncovered items and documentation falsely attributed to various government agencies. Two knives and replica weapons were also uncovered.

EORT conducted a controlled detonation of the explosive materials located within the Wooloowin residence later that evening before rendering the area safe.

A 42-year-old Capalaba man was transported to hospital for further assessment and has since been charged with one count each of manufacture explosive without authority, authority required to possess explosives, unlawful possession of weapons, possession of a knife in a public place, common assault, carry exposed weapon in a public place, assume designation or description of police officer, possessing dangerous drugs and possessing/acquiring restricted items.

He is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court this afternoon (May 18).
