Potato review welcome, injunction needed

Tasmanian Labor
  • Review far too late, but welcome
  • Injunction needed to protect the industry
  • Jobs and sector at risk
  • The state government’s reluctant review of a decision to allow the import of potatoes from South Australia is welcome news, but an injunction should be immediately put in place to protect the industry while the review occurs.

Shadow Minister for Primary Industries Shane Broad said failure to put in place an injunction could put at risk our disease free status and the Tasmanian brand.

“The government’s decision to allow imports was taken without consultation with Tasmania’s potato producers and poses a serious risk to the state’s $400 million potato industry.

“That means putting at risk the jobs of farmers, packers and processors, and the viability of the industry.

“The government has this process back to front. The review announced this week is an admission of failure by Guy Barnett. It should have been undertaken before any decision to open the state to potato imports.

“An import injunction should be in place because a large shipment could come in at any time.

“This government says it supports our agricultural sector, but this reckless import decision puts at risk everything the potato industry needs to thrive – disease free status, brand excellence and the ability to confidently pursue export markets.

“Guy Barnett needs to start putting the Tasmanian potato industry first.”
