Prescribed burns at Little Mount Taylor, Blue Gum Point and Molonglo Valley

A prescribed burn will be conducted today at Little Mount Taylor, one prescribed burn will be conducted on Thursday 20 April at Blue Gum Point, and one prescribed burn will be conducted at Molonglo Valley near the National Arboretum on Friday 21 April, subject to suitable weather and fuel moisture conditions.

The prescribed burn at Little Mount Taylor is an ecological burn to improve the grassland and reduce the risk of fire.

The prescribed burn at Blue Gum Point is an ecological burn to improve the Box-Gum native woodlands and help the Button Wrinklewort and Golden Sun Moth populations.

The prescribed burn in Molonglo Valley near the National Arboretum is to enhance the Box-Gum woodland conditions, reduce the risk of fire and protect the surrounding areas.

See the location map of the burn sites.

Experienced ACT Parks and Conservation fire managers will conduct and oversee the burning operation. Every effort is made to conduct burns in weather conditions that will minimise the impact of smoke, but temporary smoke cover is possible and may be visible across parts of Canberra.

A buffer zone will be created around the perimeter of each prescribed burn to manage each burn to its conclusion.

Some minor smoke and glowing embers may be seen at these sites, which is normal for these types of operations. The public are asked not to call emergency triple-zero unless they see any unattended fire.

Prescribed burns are an important part of the ACT’s annual Bushfire Operations Plan to reduce the risk of bushfires and help keep Canberrans safe.
