, Dean of Monash University’s Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture has been appointed as a Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects.
The appointment recognises Professor Murray’s outstanding contribution to architecture, over a career spanning more than thirty years. In this time, he has focused on leadership and establishing programs in architectural education. He is currently focusing on research on contemporary housing and urban design issues.
Professor Murray’s work demonstrates genuine collaboration across academy, practice and government. He has forged a dynamic blend of practice-based research, cross faculty and institutional research initiatives.
He is a member of the Victorian Government’s Design Review Panel and was an advisor to the current metropolitan planning strategy, Plan Melbourne.
Professor Murray is an awarded designer and has been published in numerous architecture journals. He has supervised more than fifty masters and doctoral candidates.
He has also curated various architecture exhibitions, including co-directing the Australian Institute of Architect’s Australian Pavilion at the 2006 Venice Architecture Biennale.
In 2008, Professor Murray was appointed as a Foundation Professor of Architecture at Monash University. Following this, he was appointed as the Head of Architecture and then moved to his current role as Dean of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture.
Prior to this, Professor Murray was the Director of RMIT University’s architecture program and Urban Architecture Laboratory.
He won the Australian Institute of Architects’ Neville Quarry Architecture Education Prize in 2012. He has previously received research funding from industry and government, including the Australian Research Council.

“Architecture is fundamentally at the core of everything I do, being able to contribute to the profession through research and practice and help shape the educational journey of future architects is a something I am very proud to be a part of, “Professor Murray said.
Monash University colleagues have recognised Professor Murray’s contribution to the profession.
“Professor Murray has continued to demonstrate the importance of design thinking as a research mode,” Professor Arthur De Bono Deputy Dean, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture said.
“He has been instrumental in building the capacity of architecture schools through innovative program development, establishing strategic linkages and creating a collaborative working environment of high performing teams.”
