QPS Crime and Intelligence Command launch first-ever investigative podcast series ‘Breakthrough’

In a first for Queensland Police Service (QPS), the public will get a glimpse inside the minds of detectives, in new investigative podcast series Breakthrough, with Episode 1 ‘Poona Paul’ now available.

Each episode will unravel a case and examine exactly what it takes to prevent, disrupt, respond to and investigate serious crimes across our state.

Breakthrough is a co-production of QPS Crime and Intelligence Command and Moo Media, hosted by award-winning writer and journalist, Matthew Condon.

From an elaborate romance scam, catching a prolific sex offender to the forensic fight to identify the body of a John Doe – Breakthrough gives unprecedented access to specialist detectives who detail the skill, science and psychology of relentless investigations, searching for the breakthrough.

Every episode will carry a message – appealing for information in unsolved cases, educating the public on the methods of scammers and how to dodge them, or detailing the depths detectives take to investigate some of Queensland’s most complex cases.

Listeners are encouraged to come along with detectives on the journey for justice – and urge anyone with information that could lead to a breakthrough, to come forward.

Episode 1, ‘Poona Paul’ takes listeners back to 9 September, 2008 at Poona Dam on the Sunshine Coast, where the body of an unknown man is discovered. What follows, is an international mystery that pushes the capabilities of investigative science.

Crime and Intelligence Command Assistant Commissioner Katherine Innes said this podcast is about taking listeners along for the journey to justice, while educating on crucial crime prevention messages, encouraging victims to come forward and urging anyone with information, to take the leap and report it to police.

“Whether it is through social media, broadcasting on television or through the Breakthrough podcast series, communicating with the community we protect is vital to us as a police service,” Assistant Commissioner Innes said.

“This series is truly a testament to our dedicated officers, and their work to not only pursue answers and closure for victims and their families – but to share the journey and show the community what it takes to get to a breakthrough,”

“We hope each episode resonates with listeners and encourages a conversation, whether it is about scam awareness, checking in with friends and loved ones or reminds a potential key-witness of information that may change the course of an investigation.”

Breakthrough will begin with three episodes, released fortnightly.
