Queensland communities will see more jobs, increased liveability and stronger local economies with more than $58.5 million allocated to 81 priority local infrastructure projects for 59 councils across the state.
Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe congratulated the councils for their initiative in recognising the need for these projects as well as securing the funding to help deliver them through the 2019-21 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP).
“A hinterland adventure playground in Cooroy, a community hub in Mareeba, improved water supply security in Home Hill, Hughenden and Bedourie, and resealing the airport runway at Thargomindah are just some of the projects being funded,” he said.
“This is another sign of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to jobs and infrastructure, particularly in regional Queensland.
“We’re committed to creating employment opportunities and these projects will do just that, while supporting regional growth and giving business the confidence to invest locally.”
LGGSP assists councils to upgrade or build priority infrastructure and deliver essential services that are needed by the local communities.
The program is designed to support eligible projects that contribute to a connected and liveable community, contribute to economic growth and employment and encourage collaboration and resource sharing between Local Governments.
Mr Hinchliffe said all approved projects must be completed by 30 June 2021.
“The two-year timeframe means council budgets can be managed more efficiently to maximise outcomes for local communities,” he said.
“The Palaszczuk Government understands the needs of local communities, and we’ll continue to invest in their future, particularly in regional alreas.”
