Council will proudly recognise IDAHOBIT from Friday 15 May through this weekend by lighting up the Altona Civic Centre, while the rainbow flag flies high at the top of the flagpole, as well as flying at the Williamstown Town Hall.
Council will also celebrate diversity on IDAHOBIT by launching a short film that features the outstanding work of Minus 18, Australia’s largest volunteer organisation that supports LGBTIQA+ young people. The film is part of a series in Cr Colleen Gates’ Mayoral Program, which shines a light on the many ways volunteers connect our community.
2020 marks an important year as Sunday 17 May is the 30th IDAHOBIT, the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. It is the anniversary of the day the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems.
It is a day for celebration and renewed commitment for Hobsons Bay to continue being an inclusive city for the LGBTIQA+ community, including people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer or Questioning, Asexual and beyond.
It is on days like IDAHOBIT that individuals and groups in our city who volunteer their time and energy to support their fellow community members really shine. Minus 18 is one of these groups who thrives, thanks to the generosity of their volunteer community.
In the film, Adrian Murdoch, the Partnerships Coordinator at Minus 18, tells us how he helps deliver events that support LGBTIQA+ people aged 12-18 and how Minus 18 has transformed and diversified their offerings in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic.
