Rockhampton Regional Council is inviting the community to celebrate National Tree Day on Sunday 30 July, with a community tree planting event at Yeppen Lagoon.

Water and Environmental Sustainability Councillor Donna Kirkland said Council is proud to once again be taking part in Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature care event.

“National Tree Day is a huge event in the environmental calendar, and one our community looks forward to each year,” Cr Kirkland said.

“There is something special about these events and knowing that you’re taking part in something that has so many direct benefits.

“When you plant a tree, you’re not only adding to the aesthetics of an area, you’re also connecting with our local environment and helping to improve habitat for our local wildlife.

“There’s a great sense of community connection, wellbeing and nature stewardship.”

Parks, Sports and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the Yeppen Lagoon site is a great example of previous planting activities.

“National Tree Day offers a beautiful and rare opportunity to take part in something where you can quite literally see it’s benefits for years to come,” Cr Rutherford said.

“Yeppen Lagoon is the gateway to Rockhampton City and the Botanic Gardens and provides a great backdrop for one of our popular walking paths and birdwatching areas.

“Over the last few years, our community has planted more than 1000 native plants to help shade and cool this site. You can already see the massive change in the area and just how big a difference these events and its participants can make.

Divisional Councillor Drew Wickerson said this year’s event will add another 600 native plants.

“This year we’ll extend our revegetation efforts with three planting sessions taking place,” Cr Wickerson said.

“Each session will run for around one hour, with the first kicking off at 8am.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming another great turn out to this year’s event and as a thank you to everyone who gets involved, we will have free native plants to take home for your own yard.”
