Release of Barmah Strategic Plan

RSPCA Victoria acknowledges the release of Parks Victoria’s Strategic Plan to protect the Ramsar wetland site and floodplain marshes at Barmah National Park in northern Victoria.

RSPCA Victoria made a submission as part of the public consultation phase and has been consulting with Parks Victoria over the last few years regarding management of animals in the park.

There are compelling conservation reasons for controlling introduced species within the park. RSPCA Victoria supports a proactive approach to protect the natural environment and the internationally significant wetlands, so that native animals and plants can thrive there.

RSPCA Victoria has consistently emphasised that the management of the feral horses and other introduced species at Barmah should be done in a way that is humane, justified, target-specific and effective.

We recognise that the management of horses in the park is a contentious issue and are pleased that the Strategic Action Plan includes options for rehoming where possible.

RSPCA Victoria will continue to monitor the situation and consult with Parks Victoria to ensure that the management of horses and other introduced species under the Strategic Action Plan is justified, humane and effective to prevent the suffering of animals.
