Yesterday we held our annual Research Excellence Awards to recognise and celebrate the achievements of Western Australia’s best and brightest cancer researchers. The awards also serve to reinforce the importance of cancer research as an aspirational career choice and provide encouragement for the next generation of leading cancer researchers.

We would like to congratulate our well deserving 2022 winners:

Dr Katherine Lewis

Cancer Council WA Early Career Researcher of the Year 2022

This award recognises an emerging cancer researcher, who has made a significant advance in cancer research within the last 18 – 24 months.

Katherine Lewis is a highly passionate early career researcher, contributing to lymphoma research. Katherine has led a number of international studies and made significant contributions to leadership and collaborations within the WA lymphoma research community.

Clinical Associate Professor Nicholas Gottardo

Cancer Council WA Cancer Researcher of the Year 2022

This award recognises an individual who has made the most outstanding contribution to cancer research over the past three years.

Clinical Associate Professor, Nicholas Gottardo, has leveraged existing local, national, and international cancer research networks and resources, to help progress the testing of a promising new drug. This new drug has a broad application and is now in clinical trial. This is a major initiative that is advancing research both right here in WA, and nationally.

Professor Bruce Robinson

Cancer Council WA Researcher Career Achievement Award 2022

This award recognises a senior cancer researcher who has a history of significant achievement in cancer research and a strong record of leadership in administration, advocacy, and promotion of cancer research.

Professor Bruce Robinson has made an exceptional contribution to cancer research locally, nationally, and internationally, with an impressive track record of leadership, mentorship and collaboration. The outcomes and outputs of Professor Robinson’s research program have led to critical and longstanding improvements in terms of disease burden due to asbestos cancers, mesothelioma and lung cancer. It is due to this contribution that Perth is recognised as one of the leading research locations for mesothelioma.

Cancer Council WA Research Grants Program

Thanks to the generosity of our incredible supporters, we remain the largest charitable funder of independent cancer research in WA.

Thanks to your support, in the 2021/2022 financial year we have invested over $2.5 million to support 102 local cancer researchers across 42 projects.
