The government must provide an explanation for continued COVID-19 restrictions relating to recreational fishers that seemingly defy logic.
On Monday the state government lifted COVID-19 restrictions to allow Tasmanians to travel anywhere within the state on land, yet recreational fishers remain limited to boating within their own municipality until at least June 15.
Shadow Primary Industries Minister, Shane Broad, said Tasmanian Labor has been contacted by numerous fishers asking why their chosen recreational pursuit is being treated differently to other activities.
“Recreational fishers are a passionate bunch and are more than willing to appropriately socially distance in the boat and at the boat ramp, they just want to do something they love, catch a feed and improve their mental health,” Dr Broad said.
“This is not about staying at the shack, but rather being able to boat from a ramp outside your council area to fish your favourite spot and return home again that night.
“Recreational fishers are simply asking why this isn’t ok when you can travel across council boundaries to Bunnings or Kmart and there are no questions asked.
“Considering mainland states don’t have recreational fishing restrictions people are rightfully asking questions but not getting answers from the Liberals.
“It’s disappointing to hear reports that questions put to the Primary Industries Minister, Guy Barnett, by recreational fishers haven’t provided any clarification for the fishing community and it’s time the government answered their questions.”
