Retail card spending remained at $6.6 billion in February 2023 compared with January 2023, when adjusted for seasonal effects, according to data released by Stats NZ today.

Spending rose across most of the retail spending categories. The rises were led by spending on durables (furniture, hardware, and appliances) and consumables (groceries and liquor). Durables rose $48 million (2.9 percent) while consumables increased $32 million (1.2 percent).
The only spending category that saw a decrease was apparel (clothes and shoes), down $11 million (3.0 percent).

Total seasonally adjusted card spending fell in February, down $155 million (1.7 percent).
The largest contributor to the fall in total seasonally adjusted card spending was the non-retail excluding services category, down $82 million (3.9 percent). This category includes transport; travel agents and other tour services; and schools and tertiary education.
In actual terms, total retail card spending increased by $636 million (11.7 percent), and total card spending increased by $1.1 billion (14.9 percent) from February 2022 to February 2023.
