Electricity bill rebates being delivered through the Federal Government’s $1.5 billion Energy Price Relief Plan will make a real difference for vulnerable households and businesses, according to the peak body for energy retailers, the Australian Energy Council (AEC).
The AEC’s Chief Executive, Sarah McNamara, said “These rebates, along with the matching support from state and territory governments will be welcome news for those struggling with cost-of-living pressures.
“Getting assistance directly to customers via their power bill is the most effective way for the Government to make a difference in the current high-cost environment.
“The AEC and its retail members have worked closely with the Government to deliver this price relief through customer bills.”
Payments will commence from July, and will be paid automatically by retailers for customers already receiving energy concessions and rebates. Other eligible customers will be contacted by the Government in September advising them how they can receive the payment.
The average market offer is currently around $2000 for households and eligible customers are expected to receive up to $500 as a result of the government’s plan.
“These payments should ease some of the pressure on households, but your energy provider also has a range of other support options for customers having difficulty paying their energy bills. You should contact your retailer as early as possible to get the support you need,” Ms McNamara said.
“The Energy Price Relief Plan will deliver genuine assistance to customers who are doing it tough. The AEC thanks the Government for working with retailers to get this support directly to those who most need it.”
