Education Minister Jeremy
Rockliff’s laughable claims that the Liberal Government is “moving quickly to
progress two new Tasmanian schools” are an insult to communities waiting for
the delayed projects.
Shadow Education Minister
Josh Willie said the Brighton and Legana schools were crucial to cater for
growing student numbers but both communities have witnessed a lot of talk but
very little action.
“We know that this Budget is
a con job because we know that this government just cannot deliver important infrastructure,”
Mr Willie said.
“Less than 24 hours after
Peter Gutwein’s Budget, the ratings agency Moody’s has already confirmed what
most Tasmanians have already experienced – the Gutwein Government will likely
fail on its infrastructure targets.
“In 2018 the government
promised the new Legana school would be finished in 2023 and yesterday’s Budget
confirmed the project had now pushed out to 2024.
“The Brighton High School we
were told in 2018 would be delivered by 2024 and yesterday the government confirmed
it would not be finished until 2025.
“Both of these projects were already delayed – like the majority of the infrastructure projects across the state that the government re-announced yesterday – and now these communities will be forced to wait even longer.
“But for Jeremy Rockliff to attempt to further dupe Tasmanians today into believing the government is getting on with the job is insulting. Families, students and teaching staff deserve better than a government that is extremely good at promising big and extremely bad at actually delivering.”
