Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens marks 15 years of Annual Tomato Plant sale

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Parks

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens is celebrating 15 years of the Annual Tomato Plant Sale.

A signature event on the Gardens’ calendar, the Tomato Plant Sale has developed a large following among the gardening community.

Record sales were reached last year, with about 8000 seedlings sold and, excitingly, a similar number of plants have been grown this year.

There will be 80 varieties of heirloom tomatoes sourced from the USA and around Australia, with seed also passed down from season to season.

Knowledgeable staff and volunteers, who carefully nurtured the seedlings, will be on hand to assist, and there will also be a range of other plants available.

Funds raised at the sale are invested back into the Gardens, supporting the continual development of the living collections and important conservation programs.

Attracting about half a million visitors annually, the Tomato Plant Sale marks the start of a busy season of events at the Gardens, including outdoor theatre performances, large music concerts, community events, and a festival celebrating the best of Tasmanian food and wine.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government continues to be a proud supporter of the Gardens providing ongoing grants and funding, including $7.6 million for the construction of a new Visitor Centre Experience, and an additional $1.05 million announced in this year’s Budget to support a number of strategic projects and support increasing annual operational expenses at this gold medal-winning tourism attraction.

The sale is on at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens from Thursday, October 13 until Saturday, October 15 from 11am – 3pm daily. A $10 entry donation applies on Thursday. Entry is free on Friday and Saturday.
