The Department of Justice’s Safe at Home program today received a gold award in the community-led category of the 2019 Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Awards (ACVPA).
The ACVPA recognise best practice in the prevention or reduction of violence and other types of crime in Australia and play a vital role in highlighting effective community-based initiatives to prevent crime and violence.
The Secretary of Department of Justice, Ginna Webster said the program involves a range of services working together to address the risk and safety needs of victims and children, and hold perpetrators accountable.
“The long-term willingness of different agencies with different priorities to work collaboratively and share responsibility for managing and addressing the risk and safety concerns of families impacted by family violence has been a great benefit to the program,” said Ms Webster.
“The passion and dedication of Tasmania Police, Communities, Health, Education and Justice to achieve the objectives of Safe at Home is highly commendable and a testament to the program’s ongoing success.
“Winning this award offers the teams involved well-deserved recognition for their effort over 14 years.”
The annual ACVPA recognise the outstanding contributions being made across Australia for crime prevention, including the development and implementation of practical projects to reduce violence and other types of crime in the community.
“This is a mature and integrated strategy and the whole of government approach to family violence that has proven to be effective over a long period.
It highlights the impacts that can be achieved by agencies working together to help vulnerable people in our communities” said Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) Director, Michael Phelan APM.
All projects are assessed each year by the ACVPA Board, which consists of senior law enforcement representatives from each state and territory police service, and chaired by the AIC Director.
The awards are a joint initiative of the Australian, state and territory governments, coordinated by the AIC and co-sponsored by the Ministerial Council for Police and Emergency Management.
