Rockhampton Regional Council has completed the construction of a single-lane roundabout at the East Street and Stanley Street intersection.

Thanks to nearly $1.1 million in funding provided under the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program, this high-crash area has undergone improvements to improve safety for the community.

Nationwide, the Australian Government is providing $110 million each year to the Black Spot Program. This includes $21.7 million for high-risk sites across Queensland in 2023-24.

Quotes attributable to Federal Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Carol Brown:

“The Australian Government is committed to working with state and local councils across the country to make our roads safer for all road users and the community.

“The Black Spot Program continues to create safer roads for our communities by delivering critical infrastructure works such as adding more traffic signals and roundabouts in locations where there is a known risk of serious crashes occurring.”

Quotes attributable to Senator for Queensland Nita Green:

“Devastatingly, more than 200 people lost their lives on Queensland roads last year. This is why the Australian Government is making our roads safer through to the Black Spot Program.

“We are committed to delivering the infrastructure upgrades Rockhampton needs to help reduce the impacts of road trauma on our communities in regional Queensland and nationwide.”

Quotes attributable to Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams:

“This project was necessary to keep our roads and residents safe.

“We really appreciate the Australian Government’s funding for this project, it has allowed us to prioritise road safety.

“I want to thank the community and local businesses for their patience whilst these essential works were undertaken.

“With the area open for public use, I want to remind residents to keep road safety front of mind. It is everyone’s responsibility to be road safe.”

Quotes attributable to Rockhampton Regional Infrastructure Councillor Ellen Smith:

“Works included the construction of a roundabout, medians and pedestrian refuges, street lighting upgrades, installation of new asphalt surfacing and minor landscaping.

“A range of technical obstacles and requirements were in play when undertaking the design and our design team did a great job preparing the plans for these works.

“Thanks to the community and businesses in the area for your patience throughout these works. We have the common goal of achieving road safety and we must work together to accomplish it.

“This has been a problem intersection for a while now, and thanks to funding from the Australian Government, these works will be able to mitigate road incidents in this area.”
