Saturday in park a cinch with Townsville upgrades

Townsville’s green spaces just got a whole lot better thanks to the Palaszczuk Government’s $7.5 million support of upgrades to the city’s Charles Moroney Park and Heatley Park.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said he was pleased to be in Townsville for the official opening of two parks, funded through the Works for Queensland program.

“I am proud to be part of a Government that recognises just how important spaces such as Charles Moroney and Heatley parks are for their communities,” he said.

“Which is why we provided $4.4 million for Charles Moroney Park and $3.1 million for Heatley Park upgrades.

“The two parks created or supported 60 jobs and are a real credit to the hard work of Mayor Jenny Hill and the Townsville City Council staff.

“From the first two rounds of Works for Queensland, the Townsville City Council was allocated more than $45 million, which has so far created or supported more than 1,200 jobs.”

Across the state, the first two rounds of Works for Queensland have so far created or supported more than 16,500 jobs and it is estimated that another 4,676 jobs will be created or supported in the $200 million round three of Works for Queensland 2019–21.

Townsville City Council Mayor Jenny Hill thanked the Minister and the Palaszczuk Government for the funds from Works for Queensland to upgrade the two parks.

“With the support of Works for Queensland, my council has been able to deliver a major commitment to redevelop two important parks in our community,” Cr Hill said.

“Residents and sporting groups have been involved in the redevelopment of the parks and the feedback we’re receiving already is fantastic.

“The first-rate facilities, which include district sports standard fields, fitness course, dog obedience and off leash area, pump track, playgrounds and shelters, picnic facilities and even a garden trail mean that the parks will be used and loved by residents of all ages.

“I encourage everyone to come down and enjoy the new facilities at Charles Moroney Park and Heatley Park.”
