Seafood New Zealand statement in response to hoiho fisheries closure

Seafood New Zealand

Attributable to Lisa Futschek, CEO, Seafood New Zealand:

“We want to see hoiho thrive and have the best chance at recovery and survival.

“As the Minister has noted, the major risks to hoiho are disease, starvation, and predators (like dogs on beaches), so it is important that all these threats are addressed using an evidence-based approach.

“This decision brings certainty for fishers who operate in the area but that is undermined by the additional implementation of a Fishing Related Mortality Limit (FRML).

“Fishers will continue to do everything they can to minimise risk and avoid hoiho capture.”
