A second man has been arrested while the other is facing court over the alleged robbery of a man in a wheelchair while making a withdrawal from an ATM in Sydney’s CBD at the weekend.
About 11.45am on Sunday (24 May 2020), a 42-year-old man – who suffers from spastic diplegia (paraplegia) cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair – attended an ATM on George Street at Haymarket.
The man noticed two males in the enclosed alcove area where the machine was situated. It will be alleged that after completing a withdrawal from the machine, he was approached by one of the men who snatched cash from his hands.
The two men left the area and were last seen running north along George Street.
Witnesses assisted the man – who was not injured – and police were contacted.
Detectives from Sydney City Police Area Command commenced an investigation.
Investigators released CCTV of the incident yesterday (Tuesday 26 May 2020), and the 42-year-old man joined officers from Sydney City Police Area Command to appeal to the public for assistance.
As a result, a 20-year-old man was arrested at Green Valley Police Station about 3.15pm and charged with steal from person.
The Sanctuary Point man was refused bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court today (Wednesday 27 May 2020).
Following further inquiries, a 20-year-old Riverwood man was arrested at Campsie Police Station about 9.30am today, where he will be charged.
