Second man charged after man found with serious burns – Newcastle

A second man has been charged after a man was seriously injured when he was allegedly set alight at Newcastle last month.

Emergency services were called to a fast-food restaurant in King Street, just after 3.20am on Thursday 28 September 2023, when a man suffering serious burns to his body sought help.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District are investigating reports the 23-year-old man was assaulted and set on fire.

He was taken to John Hunter Hospital before he was transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Detectives commenced an investigation into the targeted attack under Strike Force Droney.

Following inquiries, a 20-year-old man was arrested at Raymond Terrace Police Station on Friday 29 September 2023. He remains before the courts.

Following further inquiries, a 30-year-old man was arrested at a property on Hope Street, Rosehill, on Friday 13 October 2023.

He was taken to Granville Police Station where he was charged with cause grievous bodily harm to person with intent, and throw/lay down etc explosive etc with intent to maim/do grievous bodily harm.

He appeared before Parramatta Local Court on Saturday 14 October 2023, where he was formally refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday 6 December 2023.
