  • Western Australians reminded to reflect on our commitment to older people, acknowledge their role and celebrate their contributions and wisdom
  • UNIDOP established in 1990 to recognise the vital role older people play in communities around the world

Today marks the United Nations International Day of Older Persons 2023, providing an opportunity to reflect on our commitment to older people, acknowledge the role they play in the community and celebrate their contributions and wisdom.

This important day was established in 1990 and recognises the vital role that older people play in communities around the world.

This year’s theme is: ‘Fulfilling the Promises of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Older Persons: Across Generations.’

The UN uses this day to advocate for the rights of current and future generations of older persons around the world.

In keeping with the theme of rights, the Cook Labor Government will soon be releasing a draft Charter of Rights for Older People for public comment.

The Charter will articulate the rights of older people and reinforces the commitment of the Government to the wellbeing and protection of all older people in our state.

It has been developed as an action underAnAge-Friendly WA: State Seniors Strategy 2023-2033 which was launched in April 2023. The Strategy is a 10-year commitment towards whole-of-community action to ensure that Western Australian seniors are valued, safe, and empowered to lead happy and fulfilling lives in age-friendly communities.

As stated by Seniors and Ageing Minister Don Punch:

“The United Nations International Day of Older Persons is an opportunity to reflect on our commitment to older people.

“We acknowledge the role they play in every aspect of Western Australian communities and celebrate their contributions and wisdom.”
