The patient-centred approach at Lithgow Hospital and serving the local community are just two of the reasons that new nurse Arshdeep Kaur chose the regional facility to continue her career.

After working at the hospital as an Assistant in Nursing, Arshdeep was inspired to pursue a degree in nursing by the rewarding experience of caring for the Lithgow community.
“The satisfaction that you get from serving patients and taking care of them – that feeling is out of this world,” says Arshdeep.
She credits the beautiful region and the supportive workplace environment as major factors in her decision to return to the hospital as one of Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District’s 2023 cohort of new nurse graduates.
“I was glad I got the opportunity to be a part of this rural setting again. I think this is a beautiful place. It doesn’t feel like going to work, it’s like my second home now,” reflects Arshdeep.
“The supportive staff, plus the cooperation and help you get when you are so new in the profession is something that makes me to want to stay on here. We stand by each other as a team, and I think that’s the best part.”
Arshdeep is on her first rotation in the Emergency Department (ED), with rotations in the Operating Theatre then Inpatient Ward next. She is excited at the variety of learning experiences that each area offers.
“I enjoy the variety of cases that come though the ED. You must be prepared for anything and everything. I love the busy environment and, of course, the team!” she says.
“When you step into a real clinical setting that’s when you realise you’ve got so much power to change people’s lives for the better. I think all nurses can do wonders and I’m so proud to be a nurse today.”
