Shadow dog with two forever homes

Roaming the streets of Whyalla, Shadow was a stray without a history, home or family. She was first adopted by lifetime animal lover Sandra, but sadly her health started to deteriorate. Sandra faced a tremendously tough decision about what to do with Shadow. Her choice changed everything. . .

Shadow was transferred to our Lonsdale shelter in Adelaide shortly after being found. The dog carers and the vets all noted that she was a very quiet and timid dog, showing signs of anxiety, such as panting and tucking her tail.

There were moments when her happy and vibrant personality would peak through, but she remained apprehensive around the staff and volunteers at the shelter.

Prior to being adopted Shadow’s life was a mystery. The Kelpie X was collected as a Stary in Whyalla back in late November of 2019. Although she was microchipped, her original owners never came forward. This is one of the sad realities of stray animals. Last year alone, the RSPCA received 1097 stray dogs, yet only 82% of those dogs were reclaimed.

Without a Shadow of Doubt, Sandra had found her perfect match

On December 22, 2019, Shadow experienced a Christmas miracle – it was when a very excited Sandra put ink to paper, officially adopting Shadow as a new member of her family. Sandra was looking for a companion to accompany her on her daily walks.

When Sandra visited our Lonsdale shelter, the only dogs available to adopt were breeds like Staffies and bull terriers, which Sandra feared would be too strong for her. She was looking for a gentle soul that could keep her company. When her gaze wandered over to Shadow, it was like a match made in heaven.

When all the other dogs were jumping and barking, Shadow was sitting quietly with her nose poking out of her cage. Sandra was immediately enamoured. When the two finally meet in the play area, Shadow went right up to Sandra she was adopted on the spot.

Shadow the dog park socialite

It didn’t take long for Sandra to become familiar with Shadow’s lively personality. She was curious and cheeky, with a seemingly endless supply of energy. She still had moments where her nerves got the best of her, especially when she was left alone. Sandra said that it seemed as if Shadow still remembers her life on the streets and always needs to have an eye on Sandra to know that she hasn’t been abandoned.

Sandra decided Shadow was in need of some doggy etiquette and reached out to dog trainer Mike. Before long she was well behaved, yet still as spirited as ever. Shadow grew in popularity at her local dog park, making friends with every dog and human she met.

“She is loved by everyone in the community,” shares Sandra.

“She just loves all people and all my family and friends love her back.”

Sandra was forced to play her hands

A few months had passed and Sandra’s health was deteriorating. Sandra began to cut back the number of walks she could take Shadow on. She was concerned about Shadow’s quality of life, could she give the energetic kelpie the amount of exercise and attention he needed?

One day, Sandra was talking to Mike about her predicament – she loved Shadow to bits but needed help in caring for her. Thankfully Mike had a plan.

He mentioned that his Dad Peter was interested in adopting a dog. They arranged a one month trial period, where Shadow lived with Peter and his wife Karyn. It turned out to be a great match – they both loved Shadow’s energetic and playful personality.

Who says a dog can’t have two forever homes?

Although Shadow now has two extra additions to his family, she is still very much involved with Sandra and now lives between the two households.

Shadow has everything she needs at both houses and is completely comfortable in both environments. Peter and Karyn take care of Shadow most of the time but will walk Shadow over to Sandra’s house at least two days a week and on weekends to keep Sandra company. Sandra also ‘baby sits’ Shadow when Peter and Karyn want to spend a night out or a holiday.

“She lives a charmed life”, shares Sandra.

“She’s very appropriately named Shadow because she just followers you everywhere. She is always around people, so she is always happy. “

When asked to describe Shadow’s personality, Sandra shared that she was lively, energetic, friendly and affectionate.

Shadow might just be the most spoiled dog we have ever seen. It is incredible to see the journey she has gone on. Shadow gets to have two walks per day and all the cuddles she could possibly need. She receives so much love from all who are around her, and Sandra even says that Shadow is loved by the entire community at her local dog park.
