Shape the future of agriculture: Join Council’s Bass Coast Rural Engagement Group

Are you a farmer or involved in agriculture in Bass Coast and want to input on issues that affect you?

Bass Coast Shire Council is looking for new members to join our Bass Coast Rural Engagement Group. If you are passionate about the future of Bass Coast’s agricultural assets, we encourage you to apply.

The Bass Coast Rural Engagement Group was formed in 2013 as an advisory group to Council to ensure an open, productive relationship between Council and representatives of the agricultural sector.

Approximately 76% of land in Bass Coast is used for agricultural purposes. Agriculture contributes over $200 million to our local economy through a combination of traditional farming – such as dairy and meat production plus processing, as well as agricultural boutique enterprises – including venison, producers, olives, wine, and cheese.

The Bass Coast Rural Engagement Group has already made a significant contribution as the peak body representing our farming community. In the past 10 years, the group has contributed to the implementation of differential rates, increased roadside weed management and the introduction of Land Management Rebates for revegetation. They’ve also contributed to consultation for Council and State Government strategies impacting the agricultural sector including the Bass Coast Unlocking Rural Tourism Strategy, Rural Land Use Strategy, Distinct Area Landscape Strategy.

The Bass Coast Rural Engagement Group meets quarterly for in person meetings at central locations in the shire. The group discuss matters that impact the rural sector, provide opportunities to network and collaborate with key stakeholders, as well as provide advice to Council on strategic direction. The group works closely with other industry bodies including Food and Fibre Gippsland, the local Victorian Farmers Federation, and Bass Coast Landcare Network.

You can sign up for the committee for one or two years, with a minimum two-year term from 2024.
