Northern Grampians Shire Council is hosting a 2-day program on the importance of a thriving social enterprise network in rural communities. The seminar, to be held in St Arnaud, is for participants from all across the Northern Grampians Shire and will explore how social enterprises and communities can build social and economic capital together.
From examples across the globe where regions have been able to sustain innovation, the one common ingredient has been that their business, community, government and education leaders have all started to work together on a plan.
With this in mind, council has partnered with Rural Councils Victoria and Australian Centre for Rural Entrepreneurship (ACRE) to bring our local leaders together to create an enabling environment for entrepreneurship.
Kara Kara Councillor Tony Driscoll encouraged all shire communities to get involved.
“This program is all about rejuvenating rural communities and can have a real influence on the future direction of the shire,” he said.
“Residents have an important role to play in both coming up with ideas and then driving the development and implementation of those ideas.”
Attendees will learn about the values and purpose of social enterprise and its context in relation to community and economic development. They will also be able to explore the role they can play in activating social enterprise in their own communities.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for community members to connect with other locals to better understand the realities of running a social enterprise and the way the model could work in any of our townships,” said Cr Driscoll.
