The McGowan Government has unveiled the successful applicants for the groundbreaking Southern Rangelands Revitalisation Pilot project to drive land and business rejuvenation in the southern pastoral estate.
16 stations will participate in the innovative pilot program, which will develop individual roadmaps to revive rangeland conditions, while building business resilience.
The group of pastoralists – nine from the Murchison, three from the Gascoyne and four from the Goldfields-Nullarbor – will explore a range of options and opportunities as part of the peer learning group.
Participants’ plans for their management systems include rest-based grazing, developing mobile watering points to reduce grazing pressure, re-establishing landscape water flow to encourage vegetation growth, the use of Internet of Things devices to monitor remote trap yards and irrigating native rangeland grass seedbeds.
The program will be tailored to the needs of the group, drawing on the experts on land and grazing management, as well as business coaching and mentoring.
The $550,000 Southern Rangelands Revitalisation Pilot project is one of the McGowan Government’s initiatives to build long-term climate and business resilience, alongside the Western Australia Carbon Farming and Land Restoration Program and the Farm Business Resilience Program.

“Pastoralists in the southern rangelands have been exposed to the impacts of climate change, so it is important they are well equipped with the latest advances in land management strategies and technologies to optimise station operations.
“The successful pastoralists bring a range of proposals to the table, which they will develop over the course of the program with the support of their peers and experts to boost rangeland regeneration and business opportunities.
“This foundation work will ensure pastoral enterprises progress the proposals on the ground, transforming the rangelands landscape and the productive potential of this important part in Western Australia.”
