Western Australia’s new world-class museum has achieved a major milestone with the construction phase reaching practical completion, on time and within the allocated budget.
To celebrate the opening, the Government has made a decision to provide free general admission to all visitors for the first 18 months of operation.
Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman today revealed the completed buildings, showcasing the stunning architecture inspired by the unique landscapes and spirit of Western Australia.
The museum was designed and constructed by Multiplex and its design team Hassell + OMA, and has just been shortlisted for the 2020 Australian Construction Achievement awards.
The team has created a state-of-the-art building with exceptional spaces for the new exhibitions and visitor experiences. The contemporary architecture integrates with the heritage-listed buildings, showcasing the history of the site and the various uses of the buildings over time.
When the museum opens in November 2020, it will include eight major galleries; a 1,000sqm special exhibition gallery; café, food and beverage options; retail and function spaces; and learning studios for people of all ages. The museum has been developed with a ‘people-first approach’ with the voices of Western Australians, especially Aboriginal voices, being shared throughout.
The project has created 2,878 local jobs for Western Australians in the construction industry. Another 420 jobs in creative industries are expected to be created by the end of the project. Eighty per cent of materials used on the project were locally supplied, including steel fabrication and concrete. Approximately $131 million worth of contracts were awarded to WA companies.
The museum will be a gateway to all of Western Australia, giving visitors a taste of everything our State has to offer. It is set to be a major cultural tourism attraction for local, national and international visitors.

“I am proud to see that Aboriginal stories and perspectives will be woven throughout the museum. I look forward to seeing the rich and diverse cultures of Aboriginal Western Australians showcased in our new world-class museum.”
