The final stage of works to remove the remaining stockpiles of mixed construction and demolition waste at the Broderick Road illegal dump site will start in June 2020.
Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) CEO Dr Cathy Wilkinson announced EPA had awarded decommissioning and demolition services contractor Ausdecom a contract to remove the remaining waste onsite, following an in-depth procurement process with a strong focus on ensuring opportunities for local industry and workers.
Ausdecom currently runs operations at sites in Norlane, Point Henry and Wyndham Vale. The company has locally based employees and will continue to use local services and staff to finish the clean-up works at Broderick Road.
Each stage of the Broderick Road Clean Up Project has employed workers and industry from the region, including truck drivers, consultants and 24/7 security at the site, provided by local companies.
Dr Wilkinson said detailed planning would take place throughout May, while site establishment and removal works were expected to commence in June.
“Removal of the remaining 290,000 cubic metres of material onsite, spread across four main stockpiles, is a huge task likely to take up to two years to complete,” Dr Wilkinson said.
“EPA’s focus is on ensuring these works are carried out efficiently, safely and with very minimal impact to neighbouring businesses, the local community and the environment.”
Dr Wilkinson said more than 50,000 cubic metres of material had already been removed from the site through the completion of stages one and two of the clean up project.
“The elimination of these hazards through the completion of the early stages of the clean-up is fantastic news for the community and the environment and a great achievement for the EPA.
She said plans were in place to ensure the Broderick Road Clean Up Project met all current government coronavirus (COVID-19) requirements.
The Broderick Road Clean Up Project is being overseen by EPA through powers under the Environment Protection Act 1970.
