Step in right direction, but not far enough

Tasmanian Labor
  • Government must present evidence for decision making
  • Today’s decisions don’t go far enough
  • Venues need support to ensure effective contact tracing
  • Labor has welcomed announcements this afternoon from the government on standing up drinking and additional requirements for registration of patron details in hospitality venues.

But Labor Leader Rebecca White said there are still logic gaps in the government’s decision making.

“Labor has joined hospitality venues in calling for an end to the ban on standing up drinking. It’s a restriction that has been hurting business and causing stress for workers.

“Even today, Peter Gutwein has not provided evidence that supports the measure, which will remain in place for indoor venues.

“Public confidence and trust requires clear evidence of the logic supporting decisions, and on this issue it is still missing.”

Ms White also welcomed the government taking a step in the right direction on capture of patron details, but said more is needed.

“The gold standard is the NSW system for contact tracing. That system means there can be a swift and accurate response to any case of the virus.

“Without government support for venues, there will be a range of systems used by individual venues, resulting in an ad hoc approach to contact tracing.

“Venues shouldn’t be left by Peter Gutwein to make it up as they go along. Clever, technology-based solutions are available and I urge the government to roll them out without further delay.”
