Still time to nominate for Young Mayors program

Applications for Council’s Young Mayors Program have been extended until May 12.

Council has partnered with the Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) to create the program, which aims to empower young people who are passionate about their community.

“Local government plays a huge role in the everyday lives of people in our communities, and that includes young people,” FYA’s Molly Whelan said.

“The program puts young people in the driver’s seat, ensuring that council policies and programs better reflect the concerns, needs and desires of local young people.”

The Young Mayors Program is a democratically-elected Youth Council where candidates will be mentored throughout the nomination, campaign and election to council components of the program.

Young people who are successfully elected to the Youth Council will be paid $1,000 for the year and will also have a $10,000 budget allocated for a “legacy project” in Horsham.

The young Council members will also work together to identify and target priority action areas in their community.

Young people who reside in the Horsham municipality and are aged 11-17 are eligible to apply or be nominated.
