Stonnington releases inaugural Gender Equality Action Plan

The City of Stonnington is proud to release its inaugural Workforce Gender Equality Action Plan (GEAP) 2021-2025, in what is a significant milestone for gender equality in Council and Victoria.

Following the introduction of the Gender Equality Act 2020, Victoria is the first and only state that requires a workplace gender audit to be carried out by approximately 300 defined public sector entities.

The GEAP confirms Stonnington’s commitment to the promotion and advocacy of gender equality as a shared responsibility across the whole organisation.

City of Stonnington Chief Executive Officer, Jacqui Weatherill, said that Stonnington is taking continuous action to advance gender equality.

“Together with the broader Local Government sector, the City of Stonnington has implemented significant gender equality initiatives to date, so that women are given greater access and opportunities for employment in our municipality.

“We have made great progress in balancing the total number of employees across the organisation; however, many other challenges and gaps remain.

“The City of Stonnington is working to address these inequalities through leadership development, gender equality practices, policy, advocacy, awareness campaigns and appointing more women to leadership roles across the organisation.

“As a strong champion for gender equality, I seek to strengthen even further our maturity as an employer of choice that reflects best practice in gender equality and inclusive practices,” said Ms Weatherill.

The GEAP:

  • Demonstrates our commitment to gender equality
  • Includes key findings from our 2021 Workplace Gender Equality Audit
  • Identifies where change is needed in our organisation
  • Presents strategies and measures to create change
  • Includes a strategic resourcing plan to demonstrate how we will deliver these changes.

In developing the plan, Council met all obligations as set out in the Gender Equality Act 2020, including the advised compliance status for the Workforce Gender Equality Audit in 2021.
