Striking a balance in trades

The second round of ACT Women in Trades Grants will support four organisations to encourage more women into traditionally male-dominated trade industries.

The successful organisations, Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen (SALT), National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA), Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT), LJS Constructions and UnionsACT, will deliver local programs to support women.

“With the help of ACT Government funding worth over $410,000, these programs will improve organisations’ advocacy, engagement and information sharing to attract and retain women in male-dominated trades in the ACT”, said Minister for Vocational Education and Skills, Meegan Fitzharris.

The Women in Trades Grants program is designed to increase the number of women in male-dominated trades, and support the growth and development of Canberra’s vocational sector.

Participants have access to skills development and training in the form of pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships, traineeships and other relevant training.

“Our grants program is having an incredible impact on the lives of women in trades in the ACT,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“The first round of grants was a great success, and I heard some really great stories from women who went through the program, and have carved out their career path as a tradesperson.”

“The ACT Government is committed to fostering gender equality in the broader community, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how the women who have taken part in this program progress with their careers.”
